Indian Patent and Design Statistics 2023: Insights for September 29 – October 6

In the latest data from the Official Journal of Patents and Designs, key insights on patent applications, publications, and grants from 29th of September to 6th of October 2023 were unveiled by BananaIP Counsels, a leading Intellectual Property firm in India.

Patent Statistics Overview:

  • Total patent applications this week: 3,125 (Early publications: 1,230, Ordinary publications: 1,895)
  • Patent examination decreased by 15.85%, standing at 361.
  • Patent grants saw no changes with 1,765 applications.

Breakdown by City – Early Publications:

  • Delhi: Decreased by 12.85% (280 to 244)
  • Mumbai: Drop of 33.33% (261 to 174)
  • Chennai: Hiked by 389% (154 to 754)
  • Kolkata: increased by 152% (23 to 58).

Ordinary Publications by City:

  • Delhi: 18.98% increase (316 to 376)
  • Mumbai: 12.08% fall (91 to 80)
  • Chennai: 780% surge (141 to 1,242)
  • Kolkata: increased by 52.71% (129 to 197)

First Examination Report (FER) Distribution:

  • Delhi: 122
  • Mumbai: 82
  • Chennai: 122
  • Kolkata: 35

Publications Under Grant by City:

  • Delhi witnessed a 10.33% drop (842 to 755)
  • Mumbai saw an increase of 3.40% (235 to 243)
  • Chennai observed a hike of 13.51% (481 to 546)
  • Kolkata reported a rise of 6.76% (207 to 221)

Applications Based on ‘Applicant City’:

Of the 3,125 patent applications, the top contributing cities are:

  • Delhi: 19
  • Mumbai: 62
  • Pune: 48
  • Bangalore: 200
  • Chennai: 248
  • Hyderabad: 82
  • Kolkata: 11

2023 Yearly Patent Overview (1st Jan – 6th Oct):

  • Early publications: 30,562
  • Ordinary publications: 25,382
  • Total applications published: 55,946
  • Total grants: 41,564 (Delhi: 17,109, Mumbai: 6,584, Chennai: 13,217, Kolkata: 4,654)
  • Applications examined: 20,091.

Industrial Design Statistics:

  • 454 designs registered this week, decreased from 578 the previous week.
  • Total designs registered in 2023: 22,433.
