WIPO Indicators Report Declares a Record Number of Patent Applications
Fuelled by Indian and Chinese innovators, global patenting activity soared to new records in 2022. Patent innovators around the world filed 3.46 million patent applications in 2022. China, USA, Japan, Korea, and Germany were the countries with the highest number of patent filings. Indian filings saw a growth of around 31.6% from the previous year. However, WIPO Director General Daren Tang warned that geopolitical instability and the uncertain economic outlook were weighing on the further growth of the IP system.

Saudi Arabia Set to Host 2024 Diplomatic Conference to Conclude Design Law Treaty
Saudi Arabia is set to host a diplomatic conference to finalize negotiations of a proposed Design Law Treaty (DLT) on November 11-12, 2024. An industrial design is the ornamental aspect of an article. Therefore, DLT aims to streamline the global system for protecting industrial designs, making it easier, faster, and more affordable for designers, especially smaller-scale designers and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to register their work.

WIPO Organising a Workshop on Mediation and Arbitration Procedures
WIPO is organising a workshop from November 28th – 30th, 2023, for mediators, arbitrators, IP lawyers, in-house counsel, patent and trademark attorneys, and business professionals. The workshop aims to cover case application of the WIPO Mediation, Arbitration, and Expedited Arbitration Rules and promote ADR options for the resolution of intellectual property and technology disputes.

PM DAKSH DEPwD – Empowering Persons with Disabilities Through Skill Development
The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) recently launched the digital portal PM DAKSH- DEPwD as part of the National Action Plan for Skill Development of PwDs. It provides end-to-end facilities for PwDs such as Unique Disability Identity (UDID) based registration, enrolling in one of the 250+ courses, exploring ETPs in their State/District providing skill training, access to study materials, and more.

FSSAI’s Initiative for Consumers with Disabilities
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued an advisory regarding the Inclusion of QR Codes on Food Products for Accessibility by Visually Impaired Individuals. It aims to enhance access to nutritional information, encouraging food business operators to include QR codes on product labels.
