Indian Patent Statistics
A total of 583 patent applications have been published in the 14th issue of the Patent Journal, 2019. Out of the 583 applications, 93 applications account for early publications while 490 applications account for ordinary publications or publications occurring after the 18 – month period. A total of 656 applications were granted last week marking an increase of about 11.94% in grants.

Abstract: Urine tests are tests done on the urine in order to diagnose disease of the kidneys and the urinary tract. There are various tests that are routinely done on the urine like Urine routine, Urine culture, Three part urine test, Uroflowmetry and urine macroscopy to look for particulate matter/excreta. Conventionally each test needs collection of the urine samples separately for each test; resulting in the patient to pass urine five times. Each time the patient™s bladder needs to be full. So effectively the patient has to drink a lot of water, wait in the hospital and pass urine four times. This is a time consuming and cumbersome process. The patient has to wait for long times to provide the sample and the hospital has to wait for long times to collect samples from the patient. The present invention relates to an embodiment which can measure various parameters of the urine at the same time. This results in a convenient one-time urine passage for the patient to help the doctor conduct the above tests. The present embodiment also allows the sample to be consistently reliable, hygienic, cost effective and the same can be done at home or in an inaccessible area also. On 4th April, 2019 the Indian Patent Office published a notification consisting of all patent applications that have been withdrawn between the period of January and March, 2019. According to the notice, over 500 applications have been with withdrawn in the aforementioned period. Click here to access the same.
120 startups receive patents in 101 days, according to DPIIT
According to the data generated by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), earlier known as Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), 120 startups have received patents for their inventions in 101 days. Representatives of the Department indicated that the breakthrough is likely the result of Startup India action plan, launched in the year 2016. The data from DPIIT shows that about 450 applications have been filed since 2016 under the expedited examination facility until the 31st of March 2019.

USITC to begin investigation into alleged patent infringement by famed solar giants
The United States International Trade Commission (USITC) has announced that it will begin investigation into a complaint filed with it by South Korea based Hanwha Business Group accusing three Chinese companies of unlawful import and sale of the company’s patented PV cells and modules. The infringing companies namely, JinkoSolar, Longi Solar and REC Group have suits instituted against them in other countries including Germany and Australia. The Chief Administrative Law Judge of USITC is expected to assign the case to an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) who will in turn hold an evidentiary hearing. The investigation is expected to be completed within 45 days from the date of first instituting the investigation. USITC has recognized certain specific units of the infringing companies in order to initiate investigation. Currently, three units of REC, six units of Jinko and eight units of Longi have been identified as respondents for the investigation.

EPO and Jordon begin negotiations on possible validation agreement
The European Patent Office (EPO) and the Jordanian Industrial Property Protection (IPPD) Directorate have begun negotiations to institute a validation agreement. The negotiations conducted in Munich were held in order to provide applicants with a simple, timely and fair system of obtaining patents in Jordan based on a patent application filed with the EPO. The EPO currently has an active validation agreement with Morocco, Republic of Moldova, Tunisia and Cambodia. When an Applicant from any of the contracting countries submits a request for validation and pays the requisite fee, the European patent application may be extended in these countries. The applications will primarily have the same effect as that of a national application and will continue to receive patent protection that the EPO grants for EPC contracting states.
The agreement with Jordan will be supplemented with an advanced technical cooperation program between the two patent offices. The EPO intends to offer training to improve and support the functioning of the IPPD.
