Sipping on IP – Conversation on Intellectual Property

 

Well I am guessing the title of this post may have piqued your interest. ‘Sipping on IP’ is an initiative taken by BananaIP, where everyone gathers over coffee and lets ideas, discussions and conversations about intellectual property brew. There are no ground rules and the conversation can be about varied topics from more current pressing issues to any IP related concept. It is a great way to connect, take a break and learn from your peers.

Topics discussed: Minimum requirement to for getting a copyright, How copyright protects the expression of an idea and not the idea itself.

  1. Aniruddha, Sambhabi, Ryan, Dinesh, Anchita and Subbu briefly discussed about OSS and the minimum requirement to for getting a copyright.
  2. On the other hand Rahul, Anjali and Gaurav discussed how copyright protects the expression of an idea and not the idea itself.

Topics discussed: Whether one can claim copyright over a language, especially when the language is fictional.

Sambha, Ryan, Gaurav, Aniruddha, Anjali, Rahul, Dinesh, Marsha and Gopika had a very heated yet interesting discussion on whether one can claim copyright over a language, especially when the language is fictional. This discussion was based on a recent news update where Paramount and CBS filed a lawsuit against a crowd-funded fan film titled Axanar which used the Klingon language, of Star Trek fame. They also debated on whether fictional languages like Dothraki, Valyrian, Bahubali, etc. can be copyrighted per se.

Sambha, Aniruddha, Anjali, Marsha and Gopika discussed about two recent Chinese decisions about the iPhone and the Facebook trademarks. While both were involved in separate lawsuits, iPhone lost, while Facebook won its lawsuit.

Anirudha, Gaurav, Rahul, Anjali discussed whether patentable subject matter under Indian Patent Law is comprehensive in comparison with patentable subject matter defined under the patent laws of the other countries such as  Japan and Britain.
