Kunnath Pharmaceuticals, Kerala recently received a patent for their product, Musli Power Xtra, an Indian herbal aphrodisiac for men and women. Musli Power Xtra popularly known as the ‘Indian Herbal Viagra’ is reportedly India’s first ayurvedic herbal formulation to receive a patent for the treatment of sexual dysfunction.
The herbs and ingredients which form part of the formulation includes the following: Chlorophylum borivillianum (Safed Musli), Mucuna purita, Withania somnifera, Moringa oleifera, Embilica officinalis, Tribulus trerrestris, Hygrophilla auriculata, Myristica fragrans.
The patent (patent no. 241602) has been granted for the application titled “Herbal formulation used as a health restorative and to treat sexual dysfunction” which was filed on 12 Sep, 2006 bearing application No. 1651/CHE/2006).
Upon looking at the claims on the patent office website, it is evident that the claims are very ambiguous and vague and could have been drafted differently for better clarity and coverage.
I have provided the claims below for easy reference of the readers:
“1. preparation of a ayurvedic medicine MUSLI POWER X-TRA for curing the male and female sexual inadequacy. The diseases such as eligospermia, lack of libido, impotency, general debility found in men and diseases such as inhibited sexual desire , difficulty in reaching orgasm , dyspareunia (painfulintercourse ), difficulty in becoming aroused , vaginal dryness, loss of sensation , sexual aversion disorder etc found in women can be cured by this wonderful drug MUSLI POWER X-TRA, with no side effects to the body which is alternative to popular medicine namely slidanafil citrate popularly known as (vaigra) , by using a entirely different process which is not followed while preparing the conventional ayurvedic medicines.
2. A procees adopted to obtain the product mentioned in claim 1 by extracting the essential ingredients and chemical constituents from eight medicinal plants viz
1 SAFED MUSLI
2 KAPHCACHU
3 ASWAGANDHA
4 SIGRU
5. AMALAKI
6. NJERINJIL
7. VAYALCHULLY
8. JATHIKA
The each of the above said medicinal plants are used for different applications in ayurveda for the well being of the human body .The properties of each plant is extracted by solvent extraction . Only the Chemical constituents of each such medicinal plant is extracted and converted to powder form which is mixed in equal quantity and is made into tablet for consumption, there by the efficacy of the product is higher than the conventional mode of preparing Ayurvedic medicine, such as boiling the entire plants and there by nutritional value and other essential ingredients of the said plants are lost . The decotion that is received while boiling will contain all the non essential properties in the plants there by the efficacy of the medicine will be low compared with that of the process adopted to produce MUSLIPOWER X-TRA.
3. A medicine that contains saponins, asparagin, dopa glutathione , lecithin, gallic acid, purenin, purinidine,propin, anaphrin,cusiohygeine, anahygeine oleferine alkaloid tannic acid, gallic acid, citric acid , minerals, irons , calcium, albumins, nitrogen, myrycue which are identified an extracted from the medicine plants by solvent extraction method and are used for curing male and female sexual inadequacies such as impotence and lack of libido etc in men and inhibited sexual desire, difficulty in reaching orgasm, dyspareunia (painfiilintercourse ), difficulty in becoming aroused, vaginal dryness, loss of sensation , sexual aversion disorder etc found in women. Apant from curing male deabilities, it is used to increase sperm count and prevent early ejaculation. Further it act as a total rejuvinator for the entire body and reduces the ageing process of cells.
4. The composition of this medicine MUSLIPOWER X-TRA, apart form its aphrodiasic use, it is good for heart and kidney. Where the chemically manufactured medicine slidenafil citrate (viagra) has side effects and is adverse to heart.”
