Indian Patent Statistics
A total of 832 patent applications have been published in the 51st issue of the patent journal. Out of the 832 applications, 20 applications account for early publications while 812 applications account for ordinary publications or publications occurring after the 18-month period. A total of 365 applications have been granted this week thereby marking an increase of 59.38% in total grants as compared to the preceding week.

Abstract: “The present invention deals with chocolates based on jaggery-instead of sucrose (sugar )-to provide unique health benefits. Patent infringement, disputes and settlements
FMC Corporation wins a patent infringement suit, in India
FMC Corporation, a US based company involved in the making of and providing agricultural solutions to farmers has recently been awarded an interim injection by the Delhi High Court in a case involving two Indian pesticide manufacturers who have been accused of infringing two of the company’s patents. FMC in its submission had contended that one of its patents containing “Chlorantraniliprole” as the active ingredient was used without authorization by two companies. The active ingredient is used in the manufacture of two pesticides – Coragen and Ferterra which are widely employed by farmers in India.
International Patent News
Development of Intellectual Property in Azerbaijan: Innovative and High-Tech Startups Conference, held in Geneva
The Ministry of Transport, Communication and High Technologies, Intellectual Property Agency, WIPO and The International Telecommunications Union, organized a Conference on 21st December, 2018. The Conference was held at the WIPO headquarters, in Geneva, to mark the 100th year of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. In June 2018, the Government of Azerbaijan had signed an MoU with WIPO in order to advance the IP system and increase cooperation. Francis Gurry, Director of WIPO said that the development of IP laws was key to the economic progress of the state. A number of presentations were delivered by the country’s leading startups from diverse fields.
EPO’s first patent publication
The European Patent Office (EPO) has a number of reasons to celebrate as the year draws to a close. On 20th December 1978 i.e. forty years ago, the EPO published its first ever patent application – EP 0 000 001 that was later issued a patent on 7th January, 1981. The original document can be accessed here. Another notable event for the EPO is that 2018 marks the 20th year anniversay of launch of Espacenet, the public patent search database of the EPO. The EPO in November this year, launched a beta version of the new Espacenet service with improved functionality.
Cooperative Republic of Guyana in process of establishing a strong IP Regime
The Republic of Guyana is seeking guidance from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to revamp its Intellectual Property Laws. The Foreign Ministry announced that their primary focus is to now frame laws that strengthen the protection of intellectual property rights in the country. President, David Granger also stated that safeguarding IP rights would be his principal agenda. The Foreign Affairs Minister has indicated that the process of drafting the National Intellectual Property Strategy (NIPS) under the guidance of WIPO is already underway and the draft could be completed by the mid of 2019.
