Dr. Kalyan C. Kankanala, Chief IP Attorney, Senior Partner, BananaIP Counsels has delivered a lecture in a One Day Awareness Programme on “Intellectual Property Rights for MSME’s Researchers and Academicians” on 23.09.2016. This workshop was organized by Centre for Intellectual Property Rights and Advocacy (CIPRA), National Law School of India University, Bangalore and Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) in association with The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Mysore & NIE Institute of Technology (NIEIT), Mysore.
Micro, Small and Medium Industries have been the hub of local inventions and this has led to the advancement of the national economy through creation of skill based employment, productive investments and value-added exports. In such a scenario Intellectual Property Rights play an extremely crucial role in furthering the economic, social and technological development of such industries. Thus, utilisation of IP as payback for profit gain can be achieved by MSME’s through identification of various potential IP by means of IP assignments and IP managements.The workshop was mainly organized to create cognizance on the importance of Intellectual Property especially to the stakeholders of MSME’s, also to the academicians, and general public who vests interest on the MSME sector, through deliberation on focused issues of IP management and strategy development.The audience consisted of various stakeholders of MSME’s, government officials, academicians, researchers, advocates and public in general.
Dr. Kalyan C. Kankanala spoke at length on the topic “Patents and Inventions”. He also spoke about the requirements which an invention should fulfill to satisfy the criteria of patentability. He stressed upon the need of patenting inventions and discussed about their commercial importance and the competitive edge which a patent holder gains through his patent in the existing market. He further highlighted the broad steps which are involved in the process of grant of a patent. He explained about each of these distinguishable steps which include Searching, Drafting, Filing, Publication, Examination, Opposition, Grant and Renewal. He also referred to various patent claims to facilitate and elucidate the discussion.
