How about having a nice chat with that special someone over a glass of wine while your friends hit the gym?
A recent study done by the University of Alberta, Canada, has concluded that a glass of red wine is equivalent to an hour’s work out in the gym. An ingredient in red wine, Resveratrol , is said to produce exercise like results on the body. The researchers opined that Resveratrol will particularly help those who are unable to exercise. The ingredient was seen to improve physical performance, heart function and muscle strength in the same way as they’re improved after a gym session. The study was conducted in rats.
It is well documented that Resveratrol can help in preventing dementia and cancer, avoiding/delaying diabetes, improving cardiac health, and anti-ageing. Resveratrol extracts are extensively sold in various forms and are used by many people in the US. Several people even take baths in wine. It is believed that wine baths enhance skin gloss and texture.
On seeing the story, we at SiNApSE decided to see if health benefits of wine are subject of patent documents. Here are some interesting patents, we found:
What can wine do to you? Here is a patent document that outlines benefits of Resveratrol.
Therapeutic use of resveratrol for hyperglycemia
US 7709539
Resveratrol, an antioxidant found in various fruits, vegetables, grapes, and red wines, has been shown to have free radical scavenging, anti-inflammatory and anti-thrombogenic activities in biological systems. Moreover, resveratrol has also been shown to be a good cancer preventive chemicaland has been recommended as a food supplement for health benefits. Resveratrol can effectively lower the blood sugar in both type 1 (insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, IDDM) and type 2 (insulin-independent diabetes mellitus, NIDDM) diabetic rats. Resveratrol could also delay the onset of the insulin-resistant phenotype in experimental rats with prolonged injection of insulin. Further, resveratrol simultaneously slows down the body weight increment compared with untreated insulin resistant animals.
Another patent document disclosing health benefit of wine extracts in compositions.
Resveratrol-containing compositions for general health and vitality
US 20080254135
The present invention is directed towards an orally administered composition comprising multiple plant extracts, which are characterized as having high ORAC values, and promote an increase in a mammal’s dietary intake of antioxidant and polyphenols to a therapeutically effective amount. The ingredients of the present compositions represent a broad spectrum of polyphenols providing antioxidant activity for the purpose of improving general health and vitality by enhancing cardioprotection and immune system functions. The composition of the present invention comprises an extract of Polygonum cuspidatum and an extract of grape skin. In additional aspects of the present invention, one or more of Red wine extract, piceantannol, krill oil, pomegranate, mangosteen, apple, goji (wolfberry), and acai berry, cranberry, mulberry, bilberry, noni, and blueberry are added to the composition to further broaden the polyphenol spectrum. Both a composition and method are provided by the present invention.
Here is a patent that talks about a wine, which can potentially give you double benefits in one glass. It has enhanced Resveratrol.
Resveratrol enhanced wine
US 20100260912
A process for increasing content of resveratrol in wine comprising adding resveratrol obtained from Vitis vinifera grapes to an aliquot of bulk wine to form a resveratrol concentrate and adding the resveratrol concentrate to bulk wine to produce a resveratrol enhanced wine.
Non-Alcoholics, who wish to get benefits of wine, can try this non-alcoholic wine.
Non-alcoholic wine beverage
WO 2009032323 A1ABSTRACTA carbonated beverage
The invention is an innovative, lightly carbonated and tunnel pasteurized beverage utilizing an alcohol-free wine base that has the same or more polyphenols per 6 to 8 oz serving than a glass of red wine. The invention provides the health benefits and taste of red wine without the alcohol in a refreshing and functional, lightly carbonated soft drink.
